BIOGRAPHY

Irma askurava

was born into an artistic family in a small city of Batumi. Her grandfather was considered to be an excellent painter and a sculptor. Unfortunately, he died few months before her birth, but his artworks(paintings and sculptures) were preserved at home and in his workshop and she always had a chance to observe them. She has also been deeply influenced by her father painter since childhood. By watching him painting, Irma learned many things. That was the reason her parents were not surprised when her first grade teacher was praising Irma's talent and outstanding painting skills. Due to Irma's health issues arising from the relatively humid climate, her family used to move frequently. She had to change schools but still remained one of the best students in each school. Besides painting, Irma also had good mathematical skills. She won several competitions in mathematics. In 1995, she won a contest in Batumi and received a special graduation diploma, which was giving her the opportunity to continue higher education in any technical university in Georgia by her choice (this was reported on TV too). In 1998 she moved to Tbilisi together with her family and entered Georgian Technical University. She decided to acquire additional profession apart from her artistic one and to be enrolled in the faculty of Tourism Management. Irma graduated successfully from the university in 2000. During the years spent in the university, she continued painting and developing her artistic skills.

By suddenly noticing a contest announcement for female painters in 2002 she made a life-changing decision to participate and it became determining for her future career. In those times tattoo was not tendentious in Georgia, people did not even accept it well. Through this contest, the organizers were supposed to find a painter and teach her tattoo. The organizer of the contest- Giorgi Shkhvatsabia had lived in Texas, USA for some years before and he used to be a tattoo artist there. Few days later, they gave Irma a call, claiming that she was distinguished from other contestants by her outstanding talent and she should dedicate all her time to becoming a tattoo artist. Irma accepted the offer, even though in that period of time Georgia was not accepting tattoo artist job very positive, especially, when it came to female professionals. Despite those moods, Irma started her job and became the first female tattoo artist in Georgia. In the beginning of her career she hid her new job from her father. But one day, he got to know the information about his daughter's job from TV, when one of the most popular TV channels reported Irma's tattoo painting process and took her first interview. Father accepted this fact in a positive way. For few years, Irma, together with her master used to work at the tattoo salon in the studio of the famous Georgian designer-Maka Asatiani, which was visited by lots of celebrities wishing to get new tattoos. Later on, this studio was closed down and Irma continued her career as an independent artist. She was already well-known all over Georgia. She often got invited to different TV channels, was taken interviews from different magazine publications etc.

In 2006 Irma got married, but she did not abandon her job. She was working hard, even during the pregnancy. At first, nobody noticed she was pregnant, as far as she was working casually. But later, it became widely known through one of the TV reports, during which she asked the cameras to be focused on her face, but it didn’t work out. This topic became more relevant through the publication in the magazine ''Hot Chocolate'', where an article was published about her, with some photos, where she was already eight months pregnant.

In 2008 she gave birth to Alexander. She had to overcome a very hard period of life together with her husband, as far as the newborn baby required an emergency operation on his heart. Fortunately, the operation was successfully undertaken and the child is now totally healthy. Despite the difficulties, she had never forgotten about her career.

In 2010 she got divorced and decided to change the environment. So one day, she just left for Istanbul. She found the studio "shadows tattoo" and start work there as guest artist. The job was pretty interesting, as far as it was the first time she was working with five different tattoo artists. She stayed there for only two months, but gained wide experience. Then she continued her career in another tattoo studio named ''Galata Tattoo-Studio'' as a tattoo artist and a co-founder in 2011. This was a unique place with an artistic atmosphere, where she loved spending her time a lot with her co-workers. She worked both in Istanbul and in Tbilisi. She only worked with clients by prior appointment, as her services were on high demand. She still managed to find enough time for her kid too. In 2013 she left Istanbul for different reasons, but the most important reason was that she wanted to spend more time with her kid. She founded a private studio in Georgia and started her job there. By the time, she became well-known and had many followers in social networks and was considered one of the highest-paid tattoo artist in Georgia. For that reason, she was able to arrange with one of the major banks in Georgia about giving her clients the opportunity to get tattoos on credit. This tactic worked pretty fine. At present, she works at her own studio in Tbilisi, preparing to participate in different global tattoo conventions in order to expand her career to an international level.
